Once-a-year market offers luck for sale

From the afternoon of the 7th day of the first lunar month (February 22), people have flocked to the northern province of Nam Dinh for a unique market which is held once a year for a peculiar sell off of bad luck, and for the purchase of good luck for the year to come.

The Vieng market opened at midnight of the 7th lunar day and lasted only through to the morning of the 8th day.

According to popular belief, anything bought at the market will bring good luck to the buyer for the whole year.

The spring market displays handicraft products, genuine antiquities alongside fakes, home utensils, tools for agricultural production, and many kinds of ornamental plants. Specialties are grilled veal and "banh day" (sticky rice cake).
